I have a 1978 Pace Car that has had a cracked T Top ever since i purchased it.
I bought a used replacement many years ago and finally got around to fitting it.
Fitting it wasn't a problem, it looked fine, but I noticed that looking through it from the inside, the replacement has an orange hue/tint, whereas the original has a green/blue.
Its very noticeable.
Can anyone shed some light as to why there are differences in T Top glass for 1978 Pace Cars?
Yeah, it's a SERVICE REPLACEMENT vs PRODUCTION. In 82, that orange hue glass, actually described as bronze, was used in PRODUCTION for the collector cars and became SERVICE REPLACEMENT in 1982. Pace Car glass was laminated but once production moved to Bowling Green, solid-tempered glass was used and in 82, became the bronze tint.
Compare the date codes. Look for the XX or XJ (two letter codes) and compare the blue glass to the bronze. It will describe the glass type, like AS3 for t-top glass along with the date code.
Contact Thompson Astro top or something like that he rebuilds those tops with tinted glass but sometimes has factory ones he rebuilds.
Mine don't match either but they both came on the car from the factory. I let Thompson look at mine and he said it isn't that uncommon.
