Default Steering Box

Hi All,
Need expert opinion:

On my "72 with power assist steering, is it wiser to rebuild the original gear box ($450.00) or get a remanufactured one out of Summit or Ecklers for under $200.?

Not sure authenticity plays a major roll here.

Thanks in advance to all who respond.

I would send a PM to GTR1999, he rebuilds or I should say blue prints the boxes. I cannt imagine you are getting a good piece for under $200.

Drop a PM to GR1999 and ask Gary his opinion. He blueprints boxes, rear ends and trailing arms. Better than new. Jerry

Or you can buy mine-

I had it rebuilt many years ago but never used- ended up going with electric power steering.

Vansteel rebuilt my original box off my 71- a rust free Georgia car I have owned since 1981.

It's yours for $200 plus shipping.

Just shoot me an email- Richard454 at comcast dot net

Hmmm..... A VanSteel rebuilt box at $200 or your box rebuilt by GTR1999 for $200 ---- a conundrum, indeed!

I know what I would do.....but I don't want to bias your decision.

Gary does a heck of a job- just a guess are you talking about the parts only for Gary to do the rebuild?

Gary did mine a couple of years ago and the darn thing is better than new, the attention to detail that Gary does is unbelievable and you get tons of photo's on the progress.

rebuild it yourself for the cost of gaskets and a couple of tubes of grease. If you disassemble it and the bushings are bad it will cost about $70 bucks for a complete kit.

I did mine a few years ago. Not an overly difficult project.

I just did mine, if your Worm and Sector are good and you are capable of pressing bushings out and back in (I have a shop press and a lathe so I made the bushing drivers) it's not a bad job. I found the Jim Shea documents were invaluable, i can send if you'd like (there are also many threads here with good info). I will say that it's not easy to determine if the Worm and Sector are good (mine looked visually fine, but were evenly worn out as i only have 1.5 threads showing on my adjuster nut after setting torque values). The Steering is worlds better now, but I need new Worm and Sector in reality.

Or look behind door number 3. For about 500 to 600 if memory serves, you could replace it with a Borgeson unit and get rid of the control valve. I have not done this myself, but others who have all seem to like it.

I got a Borgeson, which I love, but I remember the factory units being very good for the time, when new. Gary is a good option for renewal.

Actually, they are very good today, if they are maintained properly and don't have significant wear. Most discussion on C3 P/S systems are about fixing or replacing malfunctioning hardware.

I have yet to see a post from someone with a properly operating C3 P/S system who wants to replace it.....just because....

Not to slight Richard in any way, but another vote for Gary's boxes. He did mine many years ago and is still going strong.
