I confess that I've let my '75 sit for nearly 6 months as the battery died, life happened, and I just didn't drive it. I replaced the battery and she started right back up without hesitation. I let the engine run for 5 minutes or so to warm and then tried to put in reverse but it wouldn't shift into gear. I tried drive as well- nothing. Worrying that it might slip into gear and leap forward or back, I shut it down but I'm stumped as to why this would happen? The transmission fluid level is fine. Any ideas where to troubleshoot?
Thanks!

Is the shift linkage intact? Can you look under the car at the selector shaft going in the drivers side of the trans and see it move when a helper moves the shift lever?
if that’s ok and you have good fluid level, you might have some internal seal issue that will take a lot more than a forum post to sort out.
Does the fluid smell and look ok? Does the fluid level change when running vs shut off? 75's came with a TH400, yours may have been swapped out at some point.

I'll take a closer look when I get home. The fluid has been sitting for 6 months and may just need to be replaced. That would certainly be the easiest fix.

Thanks for the suggestion. I'll see if my wife can help me check this later tonight when I'm home from work. I'm hopeful that the problem may just be that the fluid is old and needs a change.
