Default Fuel Lines Correct?

Hey guys,
This is my first post on the forum. I recently acquired a ‘78 that I’m finishing the restoration on.
My question is, can I run my fuel set up this way? (pictured below)
I have the fuel feed line on the inlet (yes, I know it’s not connected yet), and the outlet headed straight to my Edelbrock. The fuel return is not hooked up, I plan on capping it off and getting a vented gas cap.
the car never came with a canister.
Thanks!

Bad idea to run a car with a carburetor on modern pump gas without a fuel return line. You need the return line.

Where should I connect the return line then?
What difference does modern gas make?

You have installed a pump with no return provision, so you can't use the stock-type setup. So in your case, run the return from as close to the carb inlet as you can.

Modern fuels have significantly higher vapor pressure than the original fuels that these cars were designed for. This causes significant vapor lock issues when using an engine-driven mechanical fuel pump. Modern cars have a high pressure fuel pump in the fuel tank which keeps the entire fuel line under positive pressure, so there is no issue on a modern, fuel injected car. But a carbureted car with a fuel pump that is "sucking" fuel from the tank will have consistent problems on hot days. GM didn't install return lines because they were not needed...

That makes sense, couldn’t I just put a vented gas cap on the tank, cap the return off, and call it a day?

All I'm going to say is that I run a Holley mechanical fuel pump feeding a Holley Street HP. I don't have a fuel return line. I don't have the charcoal canister connected to the carb. I have a vented fuel cap. No problems starting the car hot or cold. Try running it without the fuel return line. If you don't have any hot start problems, call it a day.

That's a plan!

Just get a high performance electric fuel pump with a bypass, but using the return line makes more sense! Vent the tank back there, not clear forward.

The fuel return has nothing to do with a vented gas cap. It has to do with gasoline temperature and the vapor pressure as Lars explained. Years ago I disconnected and capped the line. Anytime I used the car on a hot day at high rpm's it wanted to stall when getting back down to idle. Hooked the return line back up and the problem went away. Cars had vented caps and return lines in the 60's.
