IF you can, get a TT out of a late shark, that's what I did with my '72 back when I got it....22 years ago....went with the smaller wheel too, wrapped a aftermarket pad over it too, just to thicken it up more , can't stand skinny wheels....

Late shark -78 onwards , the columns were 2 inches shorter. You have to trim the plastic shrouds on the column a little to get them to fit on a 76 or older c3.

Jim Shea discusses this in one of his papers.

you need to make sure you can get the rag joint to fit. the 68 box , rag joint and column arent interchangeable with later models. You may need to start a new thread asking how to change a 68 column to a later C3 in the title so you get more looks. You may be able to take the 68 rag joint apart and put the year ragjoint top on it or get a different coupler to mate them.

The big components that didnt need to be re engineered on a 68 came off a 67. The spindles, steering box, big block/ small block A/C radiator are all 67 parts.

I forgot to remember, yes, the flange on the firewall needs be spaced off by min of 3/4 inch, I just cut a plywood piece to fit....seal it all in with black RTV, the tabs on the wheel holding to the dash metal needed reversing so to extend a bit for bolts fitting, my car is a '72 I dunno about year differences if any.....

I went with the Ididit column. It worked really well and was super easy to put in.

I wonder, does the ididit univeral tilt AND telescoping column fit into the c3?
And if so, what length? Like, what's the stock length?
This could have a double benefit, since borgeson steering boxes usually require compressing the steering column which is bad since it removes that as a safety feature.

But with a slightly shorter universal column, especially ididit's because they're collapsible, you get tilt/telescoping + collapsability + compatibility with a borgeson box

unless.....those universal columns just flat out down't work in a c3 context for some reason

They make one for a C3. I have one but its not telescoping, just tilt. It doesnt tilt up very far though. It will tilt down and hit the seat though. Its 2 years old so I dont know if theres another model

I have the IDIDIT tilt column. I just installed the Borgeson power steering. I highly recommend it. If you do it all at once, it would be easier than a retro fit. I had to cut 2.5 inch off the column. LOVE IT!!!!! OH,,,, I have a 68.

correct, i was looking at the universal column because you get telescoping and possibly better tilt, and it's actually a little cheaper, i just don't know if it's awful to install or just whatever

2.5 inches eh? some really rough googling seems to say the 77+ columns are 38.3 inches long steering wheel to end of shaft, so the 35.25 universal column should be short enough to let the borgeson box clear without cutting the splines....unless i'm misreading the distances and what i really want is the 38.25 long universal column

edit: although, maybe not, since https://www.ididitinc.com/i-25048758...tegory:1310139 is advertised as being collapsible, implying the rest of them are not

When IDIDIT talks about "collapsible", they mean in an accident. I talked to them. They said if YOU collapse the column, you will destroy it. DOH!
I also think ordering the correct length would be very tricky. If you are 1/4 inch off, it wont fit.

confirmed with ididit over the phone, their columns that aren't explicitly marketed as collapsible will only compress a few inches in a crash instead of properly collapsing away
the only ididit columns that will actually collapse are the universal collapsibles
https://www.ididitinc.com/c-1310139-...oor-shift.html
i guess on the upside they're quite a bit cheaper
also apparently they do actually tilt as well, in the item description it mentions an 8 position tilt?

The point with the IDIDIT column is that you can NOT hammer on the end of the column to adjust the length, to fit a new steering box. You can cut it to fit as I did. The easiest way is to get a DD rag joint end, then use a cutting wheel to shape a new DD end on the cut column shaft. It needs to be a 1 inch shaft.

This is before.

This is after.

This is how to make a mock column to figure out how much to cut off. As you need to remove the column when you install the new steering box

hmm, how long would you say your newly cut down column is? like 35"? Or longer
the ididit collapsibles are 35" at the longest, but have 32/30/28" sizes as well, although i expect those are too short

Mike 68's are a little more difficult...they of course have the key on the dash. A 69-74 T'N T will fit.....however you're going to have to find a 68 only T'N'T or at least find the parts to convert THAT back to a 68.

ONE YEAR MODEL!

For what it's worth, my '76 has a Tilt/telescope column. Not sure if its different than the 77 and newer.
