This is how the car came and I was told that it did run before the engine went bad. Is there a simple way to clean up this wiring mess? Thanks

You can't "clean up" melted wires and plugs.

First thing you want to do is find a good wiring diagram. If you're comfortable working with wiring then it's relatively simple....if you're not, then it might be a bit frustrating.....anyway;

Identify the damaged connectors and order some replacements. Meanwhile go get some heat shrink in various sizes and a small soldering torch and some fine solder. You can probable find that all at Harbor Freight for a pretty good price. Start cleaning your wires and sorting them out. Find a wiring diagram and determine what is what. Once you have it sorted out, then do some system checks before soldering things together.

The first thing is to disconnect the battery. Doc Rebuild has some really good wiring diagrams although you haven't said what year your car is. If you are not interested in originality, Weather Pack has some really good electrical connectors and I've gotten mine from Pegasus Racing. They do require the correct tools to crimp, etc.

As Carriljc says, heat shrink and a decent size soldering gun/iron. Clear heat shrink allows you to slide in a piece of paper identifying the wire. Print it out on your computer in 9 point type. Oh and get some quality wire strippers.

Like others have said, check out Doc Rebuild, excellent wiring diagrams! Also at this point you'd probably be better off buying a new wiring harness, I've had good luck with lectric limiteds wiring harness'

x2 on the Doc Rebuild wiring diagrams. I bought his diagram for my 77 after spending money on one from another vendor that was flat out wrong. Pretty easy to decipher and covers mid year changes too (at least for my year).

Word of warning tho: brown wires on the diagram turn purple after a while in the sun! Makes it really hard to understand at a glance. Very frustrating, but totally my own fault.
