My ZZ4 engine (350 CID) somehow has an Edelbrock 1803 carb on it. This carburetor is rated at 500 CFM. This may be good for increased fuel mileage but I'd like to use the ZZ4 at it's peak potential, so I'm looking for opinions of what I should do. I'm leaning towards an Edelbrock 600 CFM #1406.
Opinions? (God, this is the internet, I'll get plenty of those).
I used the Edelbrock 1406 on my wife's ZZ4 equipped 78 with the GM "hot cam" and 1.6 rockers with hooker long tubes. The carb has worked very well for over 10 years. I think with 500 cfm you might be a bit light.
A lot depends on elevation and how you drive the car. I would look at 600 to 650 cfm. I like the Demon street carb with smaller primaries and triple stack boosters for the street. Great throttle response. It also has a 3 barrel like secondary goggle valve type which adds to top end. Easily tuneable and reasonably priced for under $300.
z2 600 auto dp stick, perfect size. Prefer smaller and jetted over bigger and screwing with it unless its a WOT is best application
Most sbc will never fully utilize a 750 in thier lifetime
My old 350 was night and day faster with a nicely tuned 650DP over a brand new 750dp. Went from "pulled hard" to tire smoke when you wanted, response was awesome
Demon made a ZZ4 crate demon 650 carb back in the day. I would suggest going with the equivalent holley style 650 from someone like AED performance. You could also just run a quadrajet and get the best of both worlds. If going the quadrajet approach I would have one rebuilt by Cliff's high performance so it is setup right.

Those Edel carbs are simple and hugely reliable. Nothing wrong with the Edel/Carter copy carbs. A more modern carb is what Summit now sells as thier own brand but it is a modern Holley design that Holley couldn't sell because it just didn't look like a Holley (enough) anymore. That Summit carb has a leak proof aluminum body and modern boosters along with electric choke.
Demon carbs are refined Holley style carbs and are sold by Holley now. Demon brand (now sold by Holley) also has a modern version of the Carter Thermo Quad. That's as modern as carbs get.
Myself I keep collecting 800cfm qjets with APT and electric choke. Buy them used at swapmeets for pocket change. But that's me.
Yeah, I saw that but I don't want to over-do it. I have to think about elevation (I'm a mile high in the Rockies) and emissions.
I have no idea how a 500 CFM carburetor ended up on my car.
The street Demon IS NOT a holley knock off but a completely different carb. I have built 3 different 355 sbc for Denver usage and all worked really great with this carb. One had a z28 off road cam and trick flow heads and really liked the big secondary / small primary set up. Here is a link to one with the thermo bowl for heat soak. If you watch Holley on e bay you can pick one up that is a factory refurbished pretty cheap. I was amazed at how well they work. https://www.ebay.com/itm/Demon-Carbu...wAAOSw2DdbNCsD

Thanks for any useful advise.
First off tell us about your ZZ4....did you buy a short block? or did you buy a crate engine? Which ZZ4 did you buy? 420hp? ....makes a difference. They come with a (Chevrolet Performance Holley 770CFM Carb, Electric Choke, Vac Secondaries). If you can't handle the big 420hp and really need to choke off the engine put that small carburetor on it, but I read the above in your first post "I'd like to use the ZZ4 at it's peak potential".

People vastly under estimate the power difference of a bit smaller carb especially at high altitude.
I have tried every type of carb and have to say edelbrocks are always down on power compared to a holley style. Quick Fuel Brawler Manual Double Pumper
Get the Edelbrock carb tuning chart and use the rods and jets listed for a 1405 600 cfm carb which is richer than a 1406. Then you can go richer or leaner from there. Rods and jets for performer and AVS are the same.
