When you say tall covers, just how much taller than original are you talking about? Is there a reason you need taller covers?
Years ago I installed a set of Mickey Thompson valve covers on my otherwise all original '77, L48 Corvette. They were about 1/2" taller than the stock tin ones. My only problem was clearing the A/C compressor. I was able to clear them, but not by much and of course had to change to a longer belt as a result.

I think the poster is worried about all the emission and etc equipment on top of the V-covers in a Fuelie.
My answer to you....A good mechanic (ME!) was BARELY able to renew the non-existent gaskets...while removing 5 hours worth of stuff to get to JUST BE ABLE to remove the valve covers.
So I'd say, while it MAY BE possible....it's gonna cost PAIN in relocating all that equip.
BETTER BE WORTH IT!

If your 82 has the L82 style aluminum valve covers what don't you like about them? I have them on my 84 C4 and had them sand blasted and then had them powder coated in an aluminum finish. I started to sand them down thinking they were aluminum.......wrong, they are magnesium and will turn a dark color if left bare!!

The '82 HAS magnesium L-82/L-46 STYLE covers... with black paint and silver ribs.
They will not only discolor but because MAGNESIUM is a flammable metal.... keep' em painted!
The poster is referring to how close the CrossFire manifold is to the V/C's....the manifold extends over the V/C's because of the Z-28 style cross-ram manifold.
Perhaps he's planning roller rockers??????
