Need starter recommendation BBC
Car: 496 big block, 10:1 compression. XFI. Been using an Autozone Duralast Gold DLG9990S starter. This is basically the late 90's GM gear driven starter. Lasted forever on the 350 but seems to be only good for ~6 months on the big block.
Symptoms: Starter will engage and start cranking and then it seems like the pinion disengages from the flywheel. Sometimes it re-engages, sometimes not. Last time this happened, a mechanic suggested shimming the starter closer to the flywheel. That resulted in about 20 destroyed teeth and me having to pull the T-56 to get the ring gear replaced.

- Timing is set at 15 BTDC when cranking in the EFI timing map.
- Confirmed that the ring gear is not slipping on the flywheel. Had a sharpie mark on the ring gear/flywheel from install and no movement evident.
- Inspected every single tooth, turning engine over by hand. All 168 look good. No chips or wear.
I did have a Powermaster XS Torque starter sitting in the garage that I was going to install till I noticed how loose the bolts were in it. Lots of play. And then I noticed the cracked case. Calling Powermaster on Monday. Please don't recommend one.
I have heard good things about CVR. Thoughts?
Honestly, I just one to do the job once. I have a Cars and Coffee next Saturday so got a little time but plan is order something this weekend if able.

The DB Electric is another version of the stock GM starter. The Duralast should have worked, unless that version is simply a piece of crap compared to the other brands..DB Electric products seem to work very well, and have great prices too.

Bit the bullet and ordered a Tilton. I am going to call Powermaster tomorrow about the cracked one.

A paper clip is about .050-.060 and is pretty close.
Very old school trick.
I believe that your previous starter was too close.
