A friend has ‘74 with a non power brake master cylinder. He feels he is getting pressure to add the booster. Did most ‘74s have power brakes? Is there any reason that he should add the booster?
He's getting pressure from whom, his car, he should know whether he would prefer PB. It was a very common option.
if you add the booster you have to change the master also.
Not a trivial job switching from manual to power brakes though it certainly can be done. As Mel asked, why the desire to change? If his brakes aren’t working well, he should focus his attention on fixing them.
Thanks for the info. He is going through a total brake rebuild is the reason he is thinking of making the change. I have a retrofit ‘55 wagon with non-power front disc that I like but have no experience with the ‘74 Corvette.
I have a '73 non-power brake Corvette. It does take getting used to, especially because almost all cars these days come equipped with power brakes. If it is your daily driver you will learn to compensate for it. If it's an occasional driver, it can become annoying. Especially when some clown darts in front of you in traffic and slams on their brakes.
I autocrossed my '73 for three years and did well enough to win my class with it the last two years. Keep in mind that when Carroll Shelby added (non-power) front disc brakes to the Shelby Mustang, in 1966 Hertz found it necessary to add a placard on the dash to warn drivers...
