My sentiments exactly and I feel your pain.. As a 73 yro tinkerer!!!
I have a 78 w/o the power antennae and if anybody chimes in perhaps they can offer me some advice also!!!
Because these cars are plastic, you really don't need a radio antenna sticking out of the fender.....so a piece of wire slung from the center wire of the cable, along the backside of the car will work just as well.....keep it down......mine was filled in before I bought the car, and the stock radio worked just fine....stereo even yet.....
My advice is to have your fave mechanic remove the power antenna and have him reinstall it after YOU open up the antenna on your workbench and re-lube the gears and rewind a replacement ($25) cable on to the antenna's spool. It is a satisfying DIY repair.
You're possibly not up to crawling into the back to fiddle with the LR speaker's affixment in order to access/disconnect the power connector and coaxial antenna connection - as well as laying on your back under the car with your arm/s vertical for a bit of time while unbolting the antenna from it's bracketing. Let your Tech do the Open and Close on the patient while you perform the actual re-cabling/lubing surgery - the "fun" aspect of the repair. Just my compromise recommendation.
