What are you wanting to know? Truth be told, almost every part on your car has a date or a code of some type. For engines, the pad on the block is the place to look. Two numbers should be stamped on the pad; the engine ID code and the VIN derivative of the car the engine was installed in. You'll have to remove valve covers to get head casting dates.

The front of the block on the passenger side has the engine assembly date stamping and application stamping. The VIN derivative is usually there as well but there are other places depending on the chassis it was installed in and the period of time. This is related to the long water pump equipped engines and passenger side alternator location issues. (Not a Vette thing).
The block casting number is found at the rear on top. The block casting date is close to this area in many cases.
