Piece of cake. If you have A/C, the condenser does not need to come out either. Just remove the bracket bolts and jamb it forward an inch with a piece of wood. The cam will clear.
Every model year shroud seems to be different but I can tell you that on a '77 after the belts, fan, pulleys are removed, loosen the shroud and lay it on the waterpump neck. Then remove the Rad, then the shroud.
The end of the cam will just clear the A/C condenser.
Not a bad job at all. Trace out your hood hinges with a Sharpie first. Then store your hood against a wall, cowl side down, go from there. Label all fasteners in baggies, take some pictures of before, especially around the Intake area, wires, throttle cable, etc.

I pull the shroud right out though.......I do not like it in the way while I am working. Also know that the oil pan will have to be dropped to properly remove and install the timing cover. Always use a one piece gasket for this.
Neat Tip: If installing a roller cam.....use the Comp short cam button and the Allstar 90010 timing cover and a thin paper timing cover gasket. This will give you exactly .010 cam endplay for the button. Done it with tthis cover more times than I can remember over 15 years. But it is just a clean cover anyway for cheap. https://allstarperformance.com/sbc-t...over-all90010/

Jebby
Jebby, in your opinion, is the linked timing chain cover a heavier steel gauge than the factory cover? Also,is the Comp short cam button the nylon unit? Planning to do my first roller swap in about 6 weeks. Thanks for info.

It is the roller style: https://www.summitracing.com/parts/cca-200
The Allstar cover is very close to the factory cover for thickness....plenty strong, and on a Vette the cover touches the back of the water pump anyway for support.
Use the 12 point ARP bolt kit as it has the flange with a raised head....so much easier to get a wrench/setup on to tighten.....I always use stainless.
The Cloyes street tru-roller may be the best deal in all of enginedom: https://www.summitracing.com/parts/clo-9-1100

dont forget moving blankets on the fenders covered with a piece of cardboard then another movinng blanket, You are going to be laying on your fender after a few minutes of trying to slide in the new cam and your belt buckle is going to play hell on your paint job. A small fender cover isnt going to hack it.
I just did a head swap on my 07 Z06 and on the fenders I used a layer of painters tape first. I also used a fender cover on top of that to protect the paint. A roll of painters tape is cheap compared to a paint job! Lay it on and it dos not slide around. I can tell you a socket or two did fall onto the tape with no problems on the paint. The painters tape is designed to come off with little or no residue. Just wipe with some cleaner and it is as good as when you put it on. As for the cam swap on a C3 not a bad job at all just time consuming on the first time you do it. Good advice on the above posts.
Here you can see one of the fenders in blue painters tape. The car is black so any blue is tape.
Larger rollers do require heavier springs.
Smaller rollers can use light springs ... OE Vortec roller springs are no more than 80 lb on seat ... about same as OE sbc C3
any new cam (small or large, flat or roller) should be installed w/ fresh springs ... surely not 40 year old ones.
