Default sbc starter fitment

Need some help I got a starter from DB electrical [mini starter 305 350 454 super torque] Price was good, showed right up.
Removed gm high torque starter with stagerd bolt pattern. Block is driled and taped with 3 bolt holes, stagerd and strait
Went to install and check gear mash. Strait bolt pattern. The starter gear hits the back of fly wheel. I would have to shim it down 1/2 {about} to get it close. Before I send this starter back, just asking am I missing something THANKS

Might want to try a different set of bolt holes in the starter. Sounds like you used the ones for the 153 tooth wheel and need the holes for the 168.

The staggered bolt pattern is used with the larger 168 tooth flywheel. The starter drive gear (bendix) needs to be in the "further away from the flywheel" position. your new starter might have more than 1 pattern?

I used one of the DB mini starters on my car '73 350/700R4 but it only had one set of holes... it works fine, but I'm gonna eventually adjust
it a little with shims to provide a better/smoother sounding engagement.

this ... 168T staggerd ... there is NO R post for points' resistor wire/ballast

---------------------------------------------- BOTH have Planetary Gear Reduction AND Permanent Magnets and No field coils --------------------------------------

if you have smaller flywheel 153T Straight ... if needed, this has the extra R post for points

Neither hole set works? The set that puts the gear the furthest from the block should make it close.

Thanks for the input. This is not my first starter replacement.
When installed using the proper holes, it places the starter gear to close to crankshaft. By about 1/2 a bolt hole.
I thank the starter is made wrong. What I was trying to find out is there an adjustment with the starter it self and its mounting flange. Again THANKS

There are multiple holes to bolt the starter motor to the mounting plate but I suspect you'll find that only rotates the motor, not move closer or further from the flywheel. You've got the starter, so you should be able to tell by looking at it or experimenting.

Maybe it is made wrong. That mini adjustable design is made by Many companies and marketed by Many More. In general, I dislike that design. Seems like too many users have too many fitment issues with that design. Seems only the $ best $ of that design (e.g. Tilton) have few if any fitment issues. I recommend the OE type PMGR design as in my above p#7 because they fit; they're reliable, powerful and relatively inexpensive. Form, fit & function so good.it's been the go to design for GM and others for some 30 years now.
