Default 79 Brake Job

OK... replacing everything... Parts on the way and my new QuickJack is going to get it's first test. But the only item I do not have are Flare Nut Wrenches. Are all brake line fitting sized at 3/8-24 for a 79 with PB?

Thanks!!!!

Just did this sae...
had flare wrenches but not so good..someday add to USA made list but for tightening ok..loosening is a crap shoot...aka vise grips...
leave. Clips on and loosen first..wet with fav penetrant..
satisfying job..if really dirty prior to maybe clean road debris..

good luck! Im still impressed with my oem brakes

And as well as flare wrenches, you absolutely should have the following as well for the most difficult nuts and bolts:

1. Aerokroil
2. Sili Kroil oil
3 Irwin Tools Vise Grip for NUTS-NOT a regular vise Grip-These wrenches will loosen almost any frozen rusted nut without stripping it:

In addition to the flare nut wrenches, I needed crows foot wrenches to get the rear brake hose replaced. I bought this set from Amazon.

You’ll love these. I bought a set on a whim. Thought they were kind of frivolous. I’m amazed how often I use them.

To save yourself headaches...get the flare nut wrench set! Fitting size changes.

I'm wrapping up an M/C brake line and calipers on a 78. The brake lines at the calipers are all the same size but the brake lines at the master cylinder change (9/16" and 7/16"). Bleeders are 5/16"

Lowes has a 5 piece Craftsman set for $19.95. Picking them up today. Also us vets get a 10% discount everyday @ Lowes. Appreciate the size details too. With my C3 down.... I'm slumming it in my new C7.

If you are using stainless steel lines- you are going to need a lot of patience!

With those Irwin vise grips are you able to get them on some of the hard to reach nuts? I've carefully used vise grips many times in the past but it takes some finesse and smooth tip vise grips to keep from chewing up the nut. I'm a strong advocate for buying tools that make the job easier but was wondering how often you can really use them.

I just used the Bolt/Nut Irwin vise grips to loosen male/female brake line flare nuts on my daughter's 221,000 mile Grand Prix that blew a brake line. There is zero chance that a flare wrench could loosen the connection without rounding the nuts and the same for a traditional vise grip ( I tried them first)..NO WAY. I have tried in the past. I also used this tool on a frozen brake bleeder with success. This tool is a superior tool to a traditional vise grip for bolts and nuts that are frozen or rusted. For $20 you can't go wrong. Try and report back.....Yes you need to have access and could be a limitation in some instances like any tool. The small version is really fantastic....

You only need to use the Irwin tool once and it will pay for itself 3X over......

To get the OLD flare nuts loose, you will need to purchase a really good quality crowfoot-flare tool...like from Snap-On. Harbor Freight type flare wrenches will tighten NEW fittings, but they will bend and/or round-off the nuts on original brake lines. If that happens, you will be replacing all of the brake lines.

But, if you are replacing them anyway, any flare wrench will get the job done. P.S. Put a LITTLE bit of lube on the threads of the flare nuts before seating them. That will allow you to generate more loading on the nut (better sealing) with less torque. Trying to get new flares to seal well with dry threads is a crap-shoot.

Do not OVER-tighten the fittings. Get them to seal well and then tighten about 1/8 turn more...not more than 1/4 turn or you could damage the joint.

This comment will be my last on this subject:

The Irwin Nut/Bolt Vise grip I referenced above will loosen nuts/bolts/flare fittings severely rusted/frozen that will NOT be loosened by any flare wrench. I have personal experience, folks, in certain situations where ONLY the Nut/Bolt Irwin Vise grip will get the job done..The Irwin Vise Grip is also invaluable in situations where 2 flare wrenches will not work holding both fittings-use the flare wrench on one side and the vise grip on the other. This tool will NOT round nuts or bolts...period.

BTW- A personal friend who fixes/repairs/ totalled Volvo cars shared the Irwin Vise Grip with me a couple of years ago..He loosens frozen bolts/nuts daily for a living...he knows all the tricks.......just to be clear.
