Default 68 rear sway bar

I installed a sway bar on the rear of my 68 and followed the diagram in the AIM. Everything looked fine when the car was still on the jack stands, but the pictures show what’s going on when the car is back on it’s wheels. The link on the trailing arm on the drivers side is very close to the caliper and the one on the passenger side is the same. I know this isn’t normal, but I’m not sure how to correct it. The sway bar I bought was OEM, but I’m not positive of the year it’s for. Could I have the wrong one on my car? Thanks in advance.

If the bracket is centered on the trailing arm and you followed the AIM as far as what end of the bolt is closest to the caliper, there is no issue as long as the bolt does not hit the caliper in the swing of the arm, The factory had only two bars, 7/16" and 9/16" and the aftermarket has a 5/8" bar.
Pictures with a straight view rather than an angle might be better.

This one is a 9/16 sway bar. I removed it and found that it is actually bent on one end so I won’t be using it. I guess I’ll be buying a reproduction part and not use this one. Thanks for your response.

The factory rear sway bar was a 7/16 for gymkhana suspended (sport suspension) SBC C3's only. Most BB C3's came with the 9/16 inch rear bar only, not the 7/16 rear bar.

I have a 3/4 inch OEM GM Style rear Sway bar (aftermarket from MidAmerica but the correct factory style) on my Gymkhana suspended L-82 4 speed in place of the Stock factory 7/16 inch bar in conjunction with the factory 1978 1 1/8 front sport sway bar.

What size is your front bar?

My car came with an aftermarket sway bar and the rear was so stiff you could push down on the rear of the car and it wouldn’t move at all. When I removed it the long bolts that connected it to the trailing arms were bent. I bought a used OEM 9/16 sway bar because that’s what my L36 came with. Since this one is bent I will have to buy a reproduction part to replace it. I’m not sure about the size of the front sway bar, but it appears to be stock.

The rear stiffness of your C3 is primarily determined by the transverse spring rate and is not effected by the size of the sway bar............

I understand that. When I swapped out the sway bars I was able to push down on the rear and it moved. I believe that the ride quality will be much better with the correct style sway bar.

Ok Sounds like the bent sway bar was interfering with the proper movement of the trailing arms....Thanks
