I put a set of Hedman 68301 headers on my '77, the only header legal for my car in California. That means the EFE which is normally located between the ram's head and downpipe on the right side is not there anymore. Hedman makes an adaptor that bolts downstream of the collector that will accept an EFE. I don't have my original vacuum actuated EFE anymore but I was able to source a thermally actuated one. Question is, will the fact that it is not vacuum operated get flagged when I bring the car in for smog? I guess that boils down to whether the description (if any) that pops up on the computer at the smog station specifies how the valve is actuated, anyone know?
Jim,
I've usually had good luck with this type of change up. If you tell them it is there, and it reads good, I'm pretty sure they'll let you fly.

Big2Bird - that is pretty much what I'll do. The good thing is the thermal EFE is 2 1/2", not 2" like the stock one so it won't be a restriction. And yes go to a different guy. The thing I don't want to do is take it to a referee.
Pzark - I doubt it. The smog guy told me that they keep tightening up the standard on the older cars.
ddawson - on the visual it failed for illegal cat (I knew that might happen) no EFE and get this, I had an Air/Fuel sensor screwed into a bung just past the header collector and connected to a meter that was sitting on the passenger seat. He wrote that up! On the sniff test it was slightly high on CO and HC but very low NO. The engine only had about 25 miles on it so I am guessing maybe the rings not being seated was the culprit there. Air/Fuel was in the 14-15 range. I might lean it out a bit next time.
My smog guy said everyone that tests smog that would know any better is dead or retired.
Yesterday I stopped off at another local smog guy (not with the Vette) and asked him the question about the thermally activated EFE, he had no idea what I was talking about. I don't know if that is good or bad.

I THINK that when the smog tech enters the vehicle info into the computer, it generates a list of items to perform a visual check on. If there is something on the car that looks like an EFE, then you'll most likely be ok.

bradleyb66 and Big2Bird, I think you are both right and that is what I will be banking on. I probably won't take it in for at least a few weeks but I'll let you know how it goes.
