Default 4 speed shifter reverse lockout

My 1979 4 speed shifter is malfunctioning. At what point do I install a rebuild kit vs replacement.

Lube the cable? How's that work on a 4 speed?
Either rebuild the shifter or put a Hurst unit in.

Yes theres a cable for the lock out when you put the car in reverse to take the key out of the ignition .It attaches to the bottom of the steering column if it stick or binds you will have a hard time shifting or you wont be able to get it in gear at all ,, its a common problem its not that hard to get the cable off if thats what your problem is ,,

The interlock cable ended in 1976, the OP has a 1979.

The shifter will go into reverse with and without using the reverse lock out. 2nd gear seems a bit out of place as well. Thanks for the reply’s.

Additional info:
Shifter goes into all all gears and all gears will move the car.
The reverse lock out rod is in its proper place and moves up and down freely.
2nd gear is not a smooth throw. Have to ease to the right slightly to find it or it stops mid throw.

it souunds like you need to clean it and tighten up the bolts at a minimum and make sure the shiftlevers are aligned. theres a slot that lines everything up while in nuetral. Then you adjust the gear levers to match the shifter to make sure they are set correctly. Then I put them in each gear and make sure I am getting full throw into each gear. If you havent cleaned your shifter ever or its still stock, revbuilding it is cheap and worth the effort.

It may only need bushings on the shifter arms

Are rebuild kits the same quality from the various suppliers?

Most shifter problems can be solved by simply adjusting the shifter correctly - most are out of adjustment, and that will cause the problem you describe.

You stated the shifter will go into reverse with or without pulling on the lockout? If so the pin at that the end of the lockout rod may be broken off. Unscrew the shift **** pull out the rod and compare the end of the rod with pictures you can find on vendor sites.

Found the pin on the right side of the shifter housing had backed out a turn. After screwing it back in, the shifter works correctly. This pin appears to have been screwed in and tac welded. Not sure what gives, all diagrams show this pin as smooth, not threaded. Thinking

about using Permatex orange or red to secure it. Your thoughts?
