Default Another shifting question

72 4 speed

The first time I pull the shifter down into 2nd after leaving the house (car is "cold") it feels like it is pushing back.

The next time i shift I to 2nd it has a small hesitation and then after that it's good.

I do remember a few times 3-4 years ago having to skip 2nd because I couldn't get the shifter to go down.

Can't really say anything else that stands out in my mind.

Anything to adjust? Lube?

Have you checked fluid level?
How much dirt on the linkage?

I have not checked the fluid but I just read instructions on how to.

Looks like I'll be able to check everything else when I get it up in the air.

Just curious, if I were to adjust the swivel at the end of the rod, which direction would it need to go for it to go in gear more smoothly?

Adjustment is made using a tool, can be home made, into a slot at the base of the shifter while in neutral. The rod length is then adjusted so that with the transmission case levers not in gear the rods connect. There is no adjustment to make movement easier.

There is a hole on the transmission lever that is closer to the pivot that will make the shift throw shorter. It sounds like you may have a synchro wearing out. I agree with checking the fluid level and you should make sure the shifter is aligned correctly while in nuetral. THerres a slot that aligns all the levers while in nuetral and you adjust the levers from there. Then I would make sure the 2nd gear transmission lever is going all the way into gear. To do that you would pull the 1rst and second gear rod off while in 2nd, move the transmission lever to nuetral then back into 2nd and see if the rod slides into the hole smoothly. if it doesnt the rod may be worn.

Rebuilding the shifter itself could help and making sure all the bolts are tight

Check the clutch pedal pad free play adjustment. Just get your tape measure and push down the pedal with finger pressure. Needs to go down about 1" before taking up the slack. If it is too tight, you can slip causing heat and clutch failure. Too loose will not allow the clutch disk to fully release which can cause grinding or difficult shifting. Usually affects reverse more than forward gears but needs to be checked.

Best to use conventional 90 wt gear oil. Synthetic can be too slippery for the blocker rings to do their job. YRMV.

Pull the fill plug and see if you can put any fluid in there.

Check the linkage adjustment.

Thats about all you can do without tearing anything apart.

It was rebuilt maybe 7-8 years ago and only has 5000 miles on it so I'm hoping a synchronizer is not something that would go bad in that time but I know zero about what's on the inside.

This forum and advice above saved me as a newbie last summer..
took to dealer...thousands for clutch transmission etc..and they never checked fluid and claimed clutch not adjustable as all slack taken out.
low fluid, adjusting clutch...2000 miles since ..beautiful ...
never never will i take back to supposed knowledgeable dealer unless alignment or something i cannot buy a tool for..

Clutch pad pedal play looks good. Just over an inch with thumb power.
