First line should be 3970010. They made millions and millions of 350s with that casting number. Other numbers I can look up when I am near my resources. Others will surely chime in.
So here's my dilemma.
I want to build a motor for my '81. Currently it has a 350 4-bolt main from a 74 truck but I don't know what cam it has and the dipstick is on the driver's side. So I've been looking for a block to be able to build something that I know what's in it. The one block, V0721UPB, has an Eagle crank, oil pan & pump but all apart. On this one I can see the cylinders and they look clean, no gouges or cracks that I can see. The other, S970010, has crank, oil pan & pump and pistons assembled. The pistons are TRW flat heads and the cylinders have been bored .060.
Any suggestions on which to choose?
You'll likely get some good & some silly suggestions but little to no consensus.
If your intent is to slap-patch something together; I can't advise.
Assuming you already own both blocks and both paid for:
If the UPB block has OE machining & OE bosses for OE Roller Cam and bore's is either good now or will clean up at no more than +0.030" ... and if it has a complete finished fuel pump mount pad ... then, hands down I'd choose the Roller Cam Block to build..That capability to easily & cheaply run a roller cam is important to me. I don't give a flip which side dipstick.
FWIW any sbc already +60 cannot be bored again. ... some very late sbc cannot successfully go that large
also, since you don't KNOW condition of blocks, cranks etc .. But Before you make any decision ... .suggest you take them to an auto machine shop and have them checked & measured ...
that way you'll KNOW what you have ... Know what have to work with and Know what's serviceable for someone else who might purchase.
The .060 block You wanna do a quicky re-ring cuz they are good pistons and bores? Fine. But that block is already .020 past the recommended max bore size. So don't get attached to it. Another option is redo your existing 4-bolt 74 truck block. It MAY have a forged steel crank in it.
