Default Hood Scoop

Planning on adding a cowl hood scoop to my stock hood. I assume the best way would be to cut out the existing scoop and by one long enough to cover the opening. Looking at a 3" high cowl. Has anyone done this. Thanks

I have not done a scoop perse, but I have done custom fenders and many many misc. repairs. My suggestion would be to not cut the existing scoop out initially provided your new scoop fits over the old scoop and you have access to the underside of the scoop. Instead sand down the hood with 80 grit, then glass from the outside the new scoop. After it is set, turn the hood upside down and then cut the old scoop out and feather the fiberglass to your new scoop. Then glass the underside of the scoop to make a smooth transition. Turn the hood back topside and finish the job with glass, then body filler to make a nice transition. Sand it down all the way to 400 grit, prep it and paint it.

If you new scoop wont fit over the existing scoop, then you will be forced to cut out the old scoop first. The only thing to be cautious of would be the hood could lose it structural integrity after it is cut. Make sure you reinforce the hood before cutting. Other than that, the method would be the same. Try to glass the underside to the extent possible to provide a smooth transition as well as a strong joint.

I really think it's much better to just buy a new hood with a higher rise or scoop. Because fibreglass tends to continue to "cure" for years. Every added on scoop I have seen done, after a few years the bond sinks and settles. And it shows badly through the paint. Just a thought. But new hoods aren't that expensive when you factor in the time and materials to bond one on.

I looked into this higher hood scoop idea last year. Just doesn't seem right to cut-up a valuable stock hood. So, having said that, I snooped around on EBay. I was surprised how many used ones were on there. They were reasonably priced, but the shpg on such a bulky item was another story.
If you go that route, just wrap up the original hood and store it. Also make sure that any EBay seller knows the difference in model yr hoods. (fits all C3s)? Nooooo.

I did something close to what you are describing, but started with an aftermarket L88 hood. I needed an extra couple inches to clear EFI using Victor JR intake so I cut off top of scoop on the hood and molded in the top part of PR-19 from Unlimited Products.

It is a scaled down L88 scoop and worked great to give me the needed clearance and still looks like it was made that way.

Hope this helps.
