I removed my carb over the weekend on my 1977 C3 Corvette to have it rebuilt. I put a rag into the intake opening and closed the hood. Well, this morning my roommate tried to start my car to move it (not knowing that I removed the carb), needless to start it didnt start. The fuel line spray fuel everywhere, outside of that, the rag i stuffed into the intake opening might have prevented any unwanted particles or fuel to enter the crank case... How worried should I be?
I should also note, I remember seeing little shavings from the carb gasket inside the manifold once I removed the carb. I figured I would have vacuumed those out later. Now that the engine has been turned over a few times, those are certainly now inside of the crank case.... Will those burn off or do I need to take the whole thing apart and remove them?
The fact that you had the mind set to stuff a rag in the intake tells me that you were careful not to leave anything there to fall in in the first place.
I'm sure your fine.
The bits of cardboard like gasket material should not really be a concern. If you left nuts, bolts or small brackets in there then... welll.... At this point .. theve wind-milled through already.
NOW... what else of yours is your roommate touching... that's what id be worried about?
Next time.. pull the negative terminal off the battery before you leave it like this so no one can play with your stuff.

I am surprised it didnt suck the rag into the valves. I agree, I wouldnt worry about some cardboard gasket and depending on how much he cranked it its all gone. If you were curious you could pull the plugs and low some air in there and see if anything blows out but again, its not worth the effort. Good thing the gas didnt ignite.
I agree with pulling a battery cable or locking the keys in the tool box where you can find them again but wont start the car from in there
