What kind of idiot would put a ECM in with the battery?! I don't seem to get more than a couple of years out of an ECM. does anyone have a suggestion on how to protect it from the acid fumes.

Maybe different battery composition? Instead of SLA , use a AGM or gel ?

I agree bad design/ packaging....however the CE has that, and it's 38 years old....so time to blame the battery, the way you charge the car, the size of the alternator and the prep you put in when Re-installing a replacement ECM.

If I ever have to replace or remove mine, I'd shroud it in vinyl plastic. Not just an old plastic bag...which is polyethylene and is a 'temporary plastic'. 6 months! Vinyl last for years and years and is pretty impervious.
The alternator works HARD when you let the battery get discharged, this produces H2S, which is your problem.
My car had a 71 amp...I swapped it into the 69 (37 amp) and put an 100 amp into the CE. This charges the battery quickly.
I also put a green switch into the car and use it religiously to keep the battery at full charge (or close to).
Sealed batteries are better.
My Optima Yellow top DOES have a vent on it but does not seem to need much attention.
The older cars, like my 69 have VENTED batteries that vent outside the car.

Hope this helps!

If the battery is causing the issue, you can move it over to the other compartment and mount it there. There is plenty of cable for the move, I mounted EBL FLASH II ECM in there and removed the scissor jack since I don't run with a spare anyway and is dead weight in there.

ECM should be where it can dissipate heat, also. Strange to be inside a small, closed box...
