noticed today a little bit of dry rot on my tires and I have been looking at tires. Does anyone have a recommendation or preference on a specific tire? Have a 77 with (I believe) the original wheels on it.

Take a look at some Cooper Cobra Gt tires. Around $110 per tire plus tax shipped to your door or just go to a discount tire store. I just put a couple on my Chevy stepside. Very good tires for the $$$.
I have Cooper Cobras on one car, and BFG Radial T/As on the other, both 255/60R15. That size will fit your wheels, and was an option for 78 and up, but may rub on a 77 (check the forum, you are probably fine).
As for a difference between the two, I haven't noticed, other than that the BFGs look cooler, but also cost nearly twice as much.

Be careful if you want to buy BFG's Radial TA's. Michelin seems to have lost the recipe and some owners are having problems with the white letters turning brown. Mine went darker in just a few months and I have tried every cleaner to get them bright again to no avail.

I have the 255-70-15s on the back of my stepside and 255-60s on the fronts. Got 50k out of my first set of fronts, still had 50% tread but were getting some weather checking.
Been running cooper cobras for 10 years. 255/60 15 rear, 225/70 15 front on my 77. Just bought another set from discount tire on line for $99 each, minus 10% special.
They run specials all the time and Memorial Day is coming up.
