Yea, I've been bitten by Murphy's law a number of times. There was a beautiful 76 frame on Craigslist for weeks , I bought this car called about the frame and it was sold the day before! Aint that how it works !!! Best quote so far was just under a grand. Still looking ,but I did buy 4 new trailer tires today.
Ain't it the truth - don't hesitate on a good deal. My grandfather had a 1928 Harley sitting in a basket in his basement for years. Finally in the 70's (that 1970's, he was only in his 60's) he got around to putting it together and carting around in it. By the 1980 he told all of us grandkids if we wanted it it was ours for $1,000. Well we are all getting started in life, marriages, moving for jobs, kids all that BS called life. Finally sometime around '95 I'm flying (that's something we did before we found out you could die from it) home from some business trip and reading the airline mag and see an article about Jay and some of his antique motorcycles. Seems the old bikes were becoming real collectible. So, I get the wife to agree and call my mother on the weekend as was the norm. I'm in no rush you see. On the call I tell her, by the way, tell Grampa I'll take his bike for $1000. She says too late, he sold it, get this, 2 weeks ago, and not even to a family member. Worse yet, if was my parents who put the guy in touch with Gramps. Breaks my heart to this day.
Well, one time back in the mid-80's we had a customer in MI. that ordered a '57 Chevy frame. We left for our parts trip Sat. morning, & were down to TX. Sunday night. Monday morning, we toured the yard & quickly found a '57 Chivvvvvvy station wagon with a good frame, & verified that all 57 Chivvys use the same frame. The yard took the body off, & stripped all the suspension off & called for a pick-up, then that afternoon we loaded it, stood it up on it's side & strapped it to the side of the trailer, & away he went. 3 days later, customer called & said he had received it & was ecstatic - it was a beauty. We shipped it class 50 & it cost the guy $125.00.
I think that's part of my problem, the guy that has the frame doesn't want to be bothered by shipping it. He just wants someone to come in and get it and go. I got 4 new tires on my trailer and it gets inspected next week , so I guess I just suck it up and go get it. I bought a big bottle of disinfectant for 1 night in a motel room. Shame I used to love to travel, been all over the US on a Harley and been to race tracks all up and down the east coast. Even raced at Homestead Fl. once Indy twice. Lost track of how many times I been to Bike Week, Daytona and Sturgis. Just don't care to do it anymore, gettin old I guess. But like the man said : Gettin old is a privilege denied to many.
repack all 8 wheel bearings. then buy 1 spare set and take it with you. along with necessary jacks and tools. seems you never need spares you have with you...

Being the paranoid kind of guy I am if I'm going long distance with my trailer I also carry a complete wheel hub. Hub, greased bearings, nut, washer and cotter key.

O-k , you guys shamed me into it and I ran out of options. Shipping is too expensive . 4 new tires on the trailer, wheel brgs repacked, got a good spare and a jack, truck all checked over, found a highly rated motel near Atlanta and called to register. Leaving in the morning for an 11hr drive, pick up the frame Tues morn and head back. Sure hope it goes as planned ! Oh, the things we do for these toys of ours.
One day I was 3 hrs from home when I hit the brakes on the freeway and My Trailer Tire passed me ! Pulled over and all the lug nut studs had snapped off. So I figured I'd head back home and get tools and fix it the next day. Went to find the Tire in the median and 3 ft from the Tire was a brand new pair of Channel Lock pliers somebody must of thrown out of a passing car ! With the Channel Locks I was able to take the Spindle off and find an auto parts store where the counter man offered to press in the new studs. I was back on my way an hour latter. That pair of Channel Locks is still my favorite pair in the toolbox. Murphy's Law sometimes works the other way around.
Made it home late last night. I stayed on the interstates and had a smooth successful mission. Luckily found a motel in a smaller town right outside of Atlanta, no trouble there (well almost). Only goofy part was a well used hooker banging on my motel room door at 2 am woke me up and pissed me off, she had the wrong room. Brought home a really nice rust free frame. 12hr trip each way, I'm still tired.
