I was faced with this same problem, luckily my vette sprung a leak on the way home to Texas (from Michigan) at transition from from framerail to engine. This leak emptied the tank of all but about a quart of fuel. I am guessing that pulling the flexible line at the tank would have the same results. You probably won't be able to drop the tank without removing the flexible lines, so the tank is going to have to be emptied prior to removal.

Suggestions that I recieved for disposing of the old fuel, ranged from burning it in the lawnmower at at 50/50 ratio with new fuel to contacting the local hazardous waste facility to pick it up.

If its treated with gas stabalizer I have used it 2 years old. After about a year untreated I wouldnt use it it builds up varnish. The gas i need to remove is about 10 years old  and getting very bad.

Depending on how much is in the tank go to a paint store for 20 bux and get maybe 2 gallons of Xylene....and run it out with that in there...save a bunch of work.....

the gasoline in the carb...MAY have varnished it a bit, but the typical leaky Qjet or holley will have vacated the carb in that length of time...for sure...
so not a problem....

so the Xylene trick...works fine...

I had gas that was at least two years old. It stunk. I took carb off and rebuilt it since the dried gas had left gunk inside. I sucked out what I could from the tank. I disconnected fuel line at carb and put a bucket at A-frame. I cranked engine for a few seconds at a time (let starter rest between) to run bad gas thru line and pump. When gas runs out put a gallon or so in tank and continue cranking proceedure until clean gas (smell and look) comes out and into bucket. Used this on my 69 Chevelle also.

Being the not so bright person that I am. I tried syphining my old gas out. I was burping fumes for the next week. I just took a shop vac, and a long tube, got the air out and drained it into a bucket. So.. a vacume cleaner works well just try not to suck to much up in the vac (shop vac).

Ace hardware even sells a small hand held syphon/pump for around $7 to $8. One thing about a vette is that they made it easy to drop a line in. I pumped out about 8 gallons of old fuel out of this car.... made my own swab mechanism and cleaned up any residue. Luckily the previous owner had already done the dirty work as a new gas tank went in when the conversion of this car was done.

One thing I would suggest you do... pull the fuel line going from the carb to the fuel pump and inspect it for any corrosion inside. If there's trash there, then the fuel line going to the tank will be worse as it basically lies in a position(horizontal) to allow residue to cake up. If it appears that way and you don't want to mess with running new fuel lines, add a second clear fuel filter before the fuel pump so you can see what it headed to the carb. And take the time to change the rubber fuel hoses in between the rear fuel line & the fuel pump. They do rot when not in usage for a long time.

I can spend all your money given time...
