I'm tired of people telling me that I'm about to lose a trim ring. I'm not, but I have a couple that wobble and it looks like they are about to fall off. Who makes the best looking and best fitting trim rings? I just cant get mine to stop the wobble.
Why the wobble? Are they bent? The original clipped on the wheel with 4 clips, each 90 degrees from eachother. Some aftermarket ones have "finger grippers". If they're mounted correctly, and not bent, I don't understand the "wiggle" :) Chuck
I "heard" a long time ago that if you let most of the air out of the tires, and then install the tirim rings they will fit better. I don't know if is true or not.
Chuck, What seems to be happening is when the trim ring was made it was slightly larger than the wheel and it puts the ring in a slight bind. When I take it off it wont lay flat. I have the type with the 4 clips and two seem ok and two dont. Maybe my wheels are two small :D
I have the factory 4 clip trim rings and have noticed that even when installed correctly they dont sit flush against the wheel. You can see the gap between the ring and rim. So even if theyre so much as slightly tweeked the wont be straight and will wobble. The other type rings with the fingers can be pushed on and they sit flush. Another problem I had with my factory rings was when I had the wheels balanced. I took the rims off the car and removed the rings and dropped them off for balancing. It so happened that the weight was placed right where the clip was to attach. I had to take them back and have the weight divided and placed on each side of the clip position. I still have the factory rings on the car but have contemplated getting the repros with the fingers. Ive seen the repros on other cars and they do look good and fit flush and true.
That "wobble" is one of the reasons I took my stock wheels off and put on American Racing wheels to get rid of the trim ring. Plus they made these little clicking noises that drove me nuts. :smash:
I have the repos on my car (not the ones in my sig they are original) and they fit good. I bought the stainless steel ones. I an happy with the fit and quality. They are smaller in diameter than the originals so the lip of the rim is visible (slightly). My old original trim rins used to come off under heavy cornering and I would have to stop, get out and pick it up...very embarrasing. The repos have never come off. I got them from ZIP's store here on the forum when they were on sale for 79 bucks about a year ago.
