If you don’t know which end was balanced to which yoke, no. If you drive it and get a vibration, either flip it or take the tranny slip yoke and get the assembly balanced. Shortening and balancing was $85 around here. Just balancing shouldn’t be tooo expensive...

If yours had all the rust damage, definitely not going to matter and will need balancing any way

When the vet was build,,, how was the drive shaft balanced? I have heard a few different opinions. Obviously it's best to mark it and reinstall it just like it came out, but what is really necessary to keep track of?

Exactly how it came out, (which end went to the tranny slip yoke and which way it was oriented......rotated and mounted). But at this point, 50 years later, is it going to be the same as it left the factory and does it have the original u joint it started with and was balanced to?
