Okay guys, I have 2 easy questions. Should I paint the aluminum intake on my l-82 with engine paint? After years of use I just cannot get it clean. I should get my heads back wednesday. Thereofore, i have the whole weekend to re-assemble things. Will it turn yellow ? peel ? The next question... Is it okay to use the O.E. timing chain cover with a Dyna Gear double roller? Thank you guys so much for your help. I only wish that I had more advise to offer/share with others. Maybe in the future. I will continue to lurk and learn. Thanks again and Happy Thanksgiving. :chevy
I personally wouldn't paint an aluminum intake. One of the advantages of the aluminum is its ability to dissipate heat, put paint on top of this and it loses some of this ability. Have you considered polishing it? As far as your timing chain cover goes, I'd think as long as it clears your fine, unless there is something unusual about the dyna gear that I don't know about.
There are several things you could try that gave me pretty good results. I tried Castrol Purple cleaner on a heavily grease encrusted TH400 transmission. That and high pressure water made the case look nearly new. A friend of mine cleaned his L-82 intake on his 79 with it and was very impressed with how it turned out. There were some discolorations, but he tried a fine wire wheel wheel on a drill and got rid of most of that.
Bon Ami or Bar Tender's Friend are a couple of very fine scouring powders that do a pretty good job when used with a stiff scrub brush, or getting into the small pits.
As a final touch up, you could try some aluminum paint on a rag and then rub it down with that.
As with any cleaner you haven't used before test it on the bottom of the manifold before you use it on the top. Some cleaners will actually dull or etch the surface of some aluminum alloys, so be careful.
The only way you can tell about the timing cover is to try it for fit after the timing set is in place. I think it will probably fit, but test fit it first. If you have to use a "taller" cover, then you might run into trouble with the water pump fitting.
