I either need a good rebuild or replacment. The cars idles way to rich, rough idle, hard starting (no gas in bowl) smells of gas after shut down. I would assume leaking at base into manifold. I had the intake off last week when I did the Cam swap and had turned carb on side . fI noticed gas pouring out from top and also see wet spots when car is sitting around upper front gasket area. Its original 77 carb. Should I go q jet or switch out to a different carb?I need all the vac ports I can get.
I solved my major carb problems by buying a new Edelbrock QJet. Plug 'n play. Thank goodness they still make 'em! These carbs get a lot of flak, but it was really the '70s-era emissions controls that should have gotten the blame.
Can't argue with buying a new Edelbrock- if you have the $$, replace and you are done with it. But, if you have the time, you might want to try rebuilding yours. The kits are cheap and it is a learning experience if nothing else. I rebuilt mine (which is original to the car) with no prior experience and it worked out great. The side benefit is I learned a lot about how the carb actually works. Regardless, I would stay with the Quadrajet. IMHO they work fine.
If I go with new q jet should I keep the hot air choke, which it has now ,or go with the electric choke set up. I would rather maintain the present set up unless I'm missing something. also anyone use the jet q jets I see in summit & jegs magazines.
Okay I took down the carb before I read the lars paper and found a couple of things wrong, I think.
First the gasket for the upper body had a crack, and I noticed that the primary rods were hung up on the gasket. When I pulled the top body off the primaries were attached to this round cylinder type of thing that was hung up on the gasket. I noticed that there is a small ring on top of that cylinder that goes into the hole where the primary rods live. the ring is loose and dosn't seem to do anything. (I think itsa metallic material). If it was to seal the area its not. I opened up the gasket area a little to help free up the primary assembly. It just kinda pops up if not held in place. I had to use a feeler gauge to hold it down after seating the rods and putting the top back on. I just slipped it out before closing it down .That was a tough trick especially with the accel pump wanting to jump out all the time.
I now realize that I also put the float needle attachment back in hanging to the small holes at the end of the float. I thought that they were to be hung from there but after reading I need to go back in and correct that. I did reasemble it and still runs rich. If anyone can understand my description of the part I had mentioned please let me know its name and if its broken. There is a spring under the primary cylinder type thing ,if that helps.
I also noticed some wettness under the carb. Leak down??
