Too big? The length?
Because 5/16 was suggested and 7/16 is larger.

Well turns our I had 5/16 after all and I went back to store and got the same thing..I had 9/16 on my mind for the rear lowering bolts and thought that’s what I had got by mistake..so 5/16 is way too big..guess I’ll try 3/8 in the morning and hopefully 3rd time is the charm

OK. Are we talking about these bolts on the hood?

Or these???
in the first photo, the bolts that hold the support to the hood, 5/16th's by 18 thread.
In the second photo, the bolts that hold the hinge to the hood, 5/16th's by 18 thread.
Not sure what your looking at.
These bolts take a 1/2 inch wrench.

5/16th's-18. As everyone else has told you. 1/4-20 sounds to small. Can only tell you what is factory. God only knows who changed what on your car over the years.

I was beginning to come to that conclusion..it’s obviously now that the hinge and or hood have been changed..I’ll try the 1/4 and see what happens..the 5/16 is definitely too big but as everyone has stated,it’s the OEM size

ok, your basic 75 hood hinge mounting point. top view.

second pic is 5/16-18 threaded in by hand and 1/4 20 slid right thru. Hood was previously trashed. I did not cut it up to prove a point. the plate is riveted in before top and bottom of hod are joined. if yours is 1/4-20, somebody got real creative with helicoils. bolt size mixup. 1/4 takes 7/16 wrench. 5/16 takes 1/2 wrench. 3/8 takes 9/16 wrench. and people who haven't been handling bolts all their lives call em by the wrench size.

Do you have the correct hood for the car? My 69 with the stock hood and my 73 which likely has an aftermarket hood have 1/4-20 hood mechanism support bolts. The hood support mechanism is significantly different than shown in 4-vettes picture. The hinge bolts on both are 5/16".

yes most definitely so..I got the 1/4-20 and they fir..the hinge only has one bolt that attaches to body and two attaching to the hood itself..definitely not stock..although they hood looks close to stock but it’s not..
