Overheating problem solved ! ....or at least I think
Ok ~ it's now getting cold in TX....but that has 'nothing' to do with it.
My '68 vette was overheating no matter how cold it was outside.
So ~ I replaced the radiator (closed system) & got an expansion tank.
Then started posting all types of questions, etc., etc.
Discouraged and not really knowing what to do (was still over-heating with new radiator) - I pulled the water pump & tore it apart last weekend.
That water pump is like brand new !!! :mad :mad :mad :mad :mad :cuss
So ~ I put everything back together (+plus a re-paint of chev. orange to the front of the engine) and :cry
Then I remebered something "very" important. When I pulled the lower rad. hose off ~ only 1/2 qt. of water came out !
So I re-filled the system again with everything back together. THIS TIME (the non-bubba way) I poured water into the "engine" (instead of the rad.) until the radiator 'over'-flowed. ;)
How I screwed up the last time ~ I'll never know. This is my first time with a closed system so warning to anyone who installs one to be SURE.....absolutely sure you have a "full" system.
IT's running great now (actually has trouble warming up ~ need a t-stat).

1) High Volume Water Pump (+30%)
2) Triple electric fans
3) Griffin Radiator (with 1 1/4 inch tubes)
4) NO ANTIFREEZE (purified water and WATER WETTER only)
5) 160 degree thermostat
My 465 HP 383 engine runs between 180 and 195 degrees with that setup...
Real common problem on many cars. I drill a 1/8" hole in the thermostat to let the air vent to the rad or out the upper hose. Some newer vehicles (V6 GM comes to mind) have a small bleeder screwed into the top of the thermostat housing to accomplish this.
always remove the top gooseneck and the thermo, fill the rad till coolant comes out the the thermo housing in the intake, reinstall the thermo, gooseneck, and top hose, fill the rest of the way. start the engine and with the rad cap off keep adding coolent till it is full. the bleeder screw on a V-6 is above the thermo and this is to be used after the thermo has opened. :chevy
