Default Power Steering Pump Shaft Play

I am getting ready to paint a power steering pump before I reinstall it on a 74, automatic with a Borgeson unit. I noticed the shaft does slide in and out a little. Is this normal or do I have another problem. Never drove the car, was in a front end accident and we are doing a frame off along with a repair.
Thanks
Jim

The Borgeson PS pumps look exactly like the Saginaw pumps. I have a new GM Saginaw pump with a pulley on it...no belt. I can move the shaft about 1/16 of an inch or so, back and forth. I have another new GM Saginaw pump without the pulley and grabbing it's input shaft, I can get it to move a little in and out also. I'd think a little in and out play is actually necessary since it's not that accurate to align the plane of the pump pully with the plane of the belt. Years ago, we had a GM Saginaw engineer, Jim Shea....PS pumps, PS rams, steering wheels,......he would have had an exact answer. Time passes on.

According to Jim Shea

"A slight but noticeable movement of the driveshaft in and out of the pump housing is acceptable. I thought there was an actual spec on the amount of movement but I can't find it. That slight amount of allowable movement actually allows the pulley to center itself to the engine pulley system.

Any noticeable side to side motion of the driveshaft to the pump housing is NOT acceptable.

Jim "

Thanks, I’ll continue with the refurb and not worry about the shaft or take it apart.
thanks again.
Jim

Been in the Forum for years, but I don’t know where to find papers. Seen people link the links for FAQ papers but again don’t know where to find. Is there a tab I’m missing?
Thanks

my power steering pulley pulls all the way out on my 2004 chevy impala v6 3800 ls. What caused that? Is it broken? Do i need another power steering pump?
