Hi All,
I am about to start installing the carpet in my 81 tomorrow...been almost 5 years coming!
My question is do I glue the carpet to the insulation or just lay it on top?
I'm thinking that if I glue it and ever have to get it back out for any reason it will be ruined.
Thanks in advance....Dale

You will need some glue on the vertical surfaces in the back. Use spray on both surfaces sparingly. Too heavy and it bleeds thru.
I was fortunate, I guess to not require any glue, or screws when installing my carpet, but it was the heavier weight (same as original) carpet option from Al Knoch.
However, I removed the old formed resin/cellophane style insulation over the rear wheel arches and replaced it with two layers of carefully contoured (via scissors) reflextix, (held in place with spray glue) stacked upon a layer of dynamat sound deadener. Looks extremely nice, and stock.
Use the same method used by the factory to hold the carpet on vertical surfaces. On early C3's, there were 3 rubber plugs in the front right and front left footwell and at the back of the storage compartment. There was some glue used to attach carpeting to the vertical bulkhead behind the seats. No need for glue anywhere else; but follow what you find was used from the factory if you are removing original carpet.
Unfortunately the carpet was gone when I got the car so I nothing to fall back on but I think I've got the idea.
Thanks, Dale
This will give you an idea of what yours would probably have looked like before, and how it should look right after you install it and before you nip & tuck everything in a bit.
Hope that maybe it helps, somehow. Good luck -
