Default Clutch Cross Shaft

Hello. I was wondering about the clutch cross shaft on my 69. Under the car and looking at different things I noticed that the cross shaft has some lateral movement when you try and check it. Both ends are tight and secure. Just wondered if there should be any lateral play, about 1/4" in the shaft. I do have some vibration in the clutch pedal and wondered if this looseness could be getting vibration from the motor and passing it on thru the clutch linkage somehow? just wondering. Thanks and take care.

Did you check if the nut holding the cross shaft to the frame bracket is tight?

There has to be some compliance to accommodate engine movement. Are you sure that isn't what you are feeling? If that nut is tight it doesn't seem that the "z-bar", as that is what it is called, is likely to come off!

As to your vibration, there could be many causes. Do you have all the anti-rattle springs? There are, I believe, two attached to the pushrod to the clutch arm, and one attached to the firewall.

One more thought, there is a grease fitting and the shaft should be full of grease.

Hello and thanks for your reply ignatz. in thinking about it, I think that as you said that there has to be some play to accommodate the movement of the motor and that is what I'm noticing. One more thing to keep an eye on. Take care.

I wonder if it's missing a seat or felt washer.

It should not move laterally. You may need to rebuild it. Only the block end is free to move. The frame side should be fixed in place laterally.

I went out this morning and checked mine. It does move a little bit laterally, about 1/8". I have all the goodies, grease, felt washer, tight nuts!

As to motor motion, rotation will mostly be up and down but I would have to expect that, being on the arc of a circle, a little bit of lateral give.

Thank you in advance ,
69 350/300hp
Removing old rusty header side pipe on the drivers side. Removing the Clutch Cross shaft and the dip stick would be sufficient to remove
and install the new header? Or am I dreaming that there's more to it? Sorry , I haven't done this in 45 years. I'm a little rusty also

Thank you
Charlie

you probably have to remove spark plugs and be careful with the temperature sender.
