Default 1972 pitman arm angle

Replacing my 72's power steering valve and ran into a bit of a problem. Once I thread the valve on to the steering relay rod, I cannot get the bolt to thread into the collar to lock it on. It seems to be hitting the threads on the rod. I am wondering if there is an issue with the pitman arm, seems to be a more drastic angle compared to others I have seen. The car was a family members and I don't have much information on it's history. I know there is a flat spot for the bolt to pass but it seems like I'm not lining up with it.

Perhaps not the best picture, I can get more if needed.

Thanks

Try turning the PSCV out one revolution, it does not have to be flush with the relay rod.
See the 'gap'.

Arm appears mounted to the steering gear box upside down. As I recall, it should be fairly parallel to the ground.

Thank you for the diagram Peterbuilt, I will try that when I get off work this evening. I was trying to match the number of turns from when I took the old one off, I'll back it off one and see if things line up a bit better.

On a side note, is there a preferred place to order the AIM from? Are there any that seems to be better than others?

I agree that something seems off, compared to the AIM pic posted by Peterbuilt and other pictures it just seems like it's bent too far down. Going to give it a good look this evening.

Thank you everyone, I do believe mine has suffered some kind of trauma its life. Going to have to get in there and inspect a little more but I do believe at a minimum I will be ordering a new arm. Really appreciate all the input here.

This is what it looked like when I first got under it

If the arm is bent and they can be from an impact you need to check the splines on the sector to see if they are bent as well.

I have seen bent sectors that were binding in the box causing binding in the steering

Thank you, I will definitely be looking closely at the rest of the steering setup.

Here are a couple of pictures of the power steering pitman arm from my 73.
The top picture is a comparison of a power steering and a manual steering pitman arm.
The pitman arm on top is a power steering arm.
The bottom picture is of the power steering pitman arm still attached to my steering box.

I could be mistaken, but I believe the pitman arm shown in these pictures is for manual steering.

This definitely shows how bent my pitman arm is. Guess I'll go ahead and get that in order. Thank you for all the pictures, really helped out

If everything was bolted up together and you couldn’t line everything back up during assembly, you might want to pull all the steering components off the front of the car and make sure nothing else is bent.
I would also get the shaft coming out of the box checked as well.

Ordered up a new pitman arm, should be here tomorrow. I'll post an update or more than likely more questions in a few days as I get time to inspect everything. Thank you all for the help so far.

The old one may be tough to get off the steering box. Especially if bent.

Just buy the correct tools for the job.
I purchased a nice set of pullers from Eastwood, and there are some good sets available from Harbor Freight.
