Default engine mods

I plan to pull my L48 this winter and am trying to plan out what I will do to the engine. What I am after is a good running and sounding engine that is no wimp but wont be a major gas hog. I have heard several people say to keep the stock intake and exhaust manifolds and just add a mild cam. I plan to use a K&N filter and excell super coil, rebuild the carb and loose the cat. I will also replace all pumps and timming gears/chain and possibly remove the fan clutch and add a flex fan. I would like to possibly add a manifold and headers later. Does this sound like a reasonable plan or should I be concidering something else.
Thanks for any help.

Better flowing exhaust is probably going to be the most major power gain. Small cam, Performer intake, headers and maybe some head work...

, but I'd also add the Pertronix HEI tune-up kit with good spark plugs and wires, and a new carb or a rebuild and tweaking of the original Q-jet. A Comp Cams 260h would be a good, mild, torquey cam. Definately do the manifold now, you'd be suited best with the Edelbrock Performer. Since you're not shooting for high horsepower, and heads are expensive, a performance rebuild would be perfect. But, the Trick flow aluminum heads are very good for the price. The ones with 64cc combustion chambers would give a big boost in compression and low-end torque, which is what you want. I believe a place in Dallas has them for $800 fully assembled, do another post about the trick flow's, because I know someone here has the link for their site, as they have posted it before. The electric fan would also be a good idea and definately get you some easy power. Engine builds can get expensive, but, it's always well worth the money :yesnod:

Go for the whole thing. Pistons, cam, heads, intake. DO KEEP THE Q-JET. Like a dummy I gave mine away when I rebuilt my engine. Didnt know better and I will keep kicking myself for doing this. :yesnod:

the MOST bang for the buck in power, economy, and driveability is to go with a good DPFI setup...closed loop....gets you twice the economy, and for less than 750 bux, is hard to beat....do the old early L98 setup, MAP style....1227730 computer....
