so I got the plugs installed, gapped at 0.40”, just need to find a socket or wrench to tighten them fully.
I was documenting the wiring at the distributor since I am going to install a new rotor and cap and I noticed that prior to the heads and intake install, plug #6 was at the 12 o’clock position towards the front. The later pics show plug #8 being in that position. Now if the order of the wires is correct ( 1,8,4,3,6,5,7,2). Does it matter that the position of the cap has changed? should I rotate it so plug #6 is back at the 12 o’clock spot?
Yes.....you are one wire off timing, or 45 degrees.......
Observations here: Get some real 3/32 vacuum line and mount the coil vertically........sideways mounted coils can get hot.

So I should rotate the cap so plug wire #6 is back at the 12 o’clock position? I will mount the coil vertically today as well. The vacuum line was replaced with this one.
also is it necessary to drill two small holes in the cap?
To find TDC with the engine all together......have a helper bump the starter while you hold you thumb on #1 spark plug hole....when it blows off....that is TDC #1.
From there you can line it up with the balancer to "0" by using a bar and 5/8 socket at the crank.
Google up how to install distributor on small block Chevrolet......this is engine 101 and applies to any engine.....if you have never heard of this, you have some research to do.
A quick search got me this: https://www.onallcylinders.com/2020/...nitial-timing/
The above link is pretty good......read it and then read it again, print it out and have it on the bench while you do it.

I am not going to type it all out.....LOL.

ive been reading that page since yesterday trying to Better understand lol. I’m going to give it a couple day’s to sink in before I do anything.
I was cleaning up the engine bay and decided to look under the distributor cap, there was a fair bit of carbon buildup. The tang on the rotor was almost non existent, I measured it using the guide that came with the new one just to compare and the old one wasn’t even in the range at all.
I’m guessing having the wrong plugs and the tang so far out is part of the reason it isn’t running properly.
