It seems there is always one more thing to check with flat tappets I heard of a recent you tube video with the suggestion that some new lifters may come through without enough crown.
Put the base on a dead flat surface and make sure it rocks a little bit. It won't be much But there should be some. If you have even one without taper it will take out your cam.

Never heard that one. The base of the lifter is "Concave" anyway. Not convex. You will see or feel nothing placing it on a flat surface.
Google: pictures of hydraulic lifter base.

Reason: Convex & concave reversed.

Google: pictures of hydraulic lifter base. Its the edge or rim of the lifter that rides the cam lobe and rotates accordingly in its bore.
wrong. no, no and no. it's convex with a crown

correct. Convex. you can also place two end-to-end, hold them up to light and should see a faint hourglass shape through the interface.

I bought an old engine for the block and it had a couple of flat cam lobes and a bunch of concave lifters. I saved some of those parts just for conversation pieces

Is that where it came from? I just heard it was on you tube. I'll check it out. Some of his stuff is pretty good but I've rolled my eyes a few times.. I'll look for it.
Just watched it. I can see where auto parts stores could cause alot of issues with poorly educated people behind the counter.
I was more like on the fact that he buys lifters from an auto parts store......I don't know if I want my 12k Hemi built by someone that buys lifters at an auto parts store....would you?
Auto Parts counter people went full retail (Oil and Wiper Blades) 25 years ago.......if anyone expects that the average counterman is going to hold himself to high standards is a gluten for punishment.
I can't even purchase the lifters I use at an auto parts store.
You are right,, I thought it sounded stupid to not get lifters from your cam company. I certainly wouldn't go to AutoZone.
He states there are 2 manufacturers of lifters, most off the shelf cams aren't ground by the cam companies either they are mass produced. Which is why I went to an small company that grinds them one at a time. And I'm pretty sure he gave me some shubeck lifters, even though he didn't charge me nearly what they cost
