Default Fuel Pump Installation Help

Does the piston have to be at top dead center to install the fuel pump? I was able to hold up the pushrod using heavy grease and the bolt on the side trick, but the pump does not seem to fit against surface, there's a gap between the fuel pump mounting surface and the plate below it. Also are there any tricks in how to angle pump into engine to help make it fit? I'm a little stuck here.

Lastly, if TDC is essential, how do I go about doing that? I have a '73 corvette 350 engine. Thanks

You can roll it around to get the pushrod as far up in there as possible....but regardless...you'll have a gap initially as the pump arm contacts the pushrod. You will get bolts started and you can then push in on pump and compress the pump arm against the spring..or SLOWLY tighten the bolts (alternating) to draw it in. Make sure you have the arm touching the end of the pushrod.

Don't forget to remove that bolt and install the short one to plug the hole!

Thanks Jim, I appreciate the response. I was able to get a few threads on each bolt and alternated and tightened each one using a long extension. Good to know I should've been expecting a gap initially. I was able to get the pump on!

I left my socket in the 3/8" bolt on the right of the block so I remembered to remove the long bolt.

As an alternative......I ground an open end 9/16' wrench down along the ears and use this to hold the fuel pump rod in place with one hand and install the pump with the other......when you get the pump lever in.....lift the wrench out at the same time and plop....goes right in. You have to apply a slight twisting pressure on the wrench to hold it up......sounds strange, but I have been doing it for 20 years this way after I stumbled on it one winter night in Michigan with no long bolts and had to brainstorm a way to hold the rod up........try it!
