Default Quadrajet Questions

Was removing parts off my quadrajet today in preparation for sending it off to Lars for a rebuild. What I found raised a couple of questions:

1) The fuel filter did not have a check valve in it. Are filters with check valves recommended? Are ones with check valves still available?

2) The idle solenoid had what appeared to be dirt/grease/debris around the plunger shaft. It cleaned out easily, but now I'm not sure it wasn't the remains of some sort of foam like filter or packing. Are those solenoids supposed to have something surrounding the plunger shaft?

On this idle solenoid, is there something missing in the cylinder the threads go around that should surround the plunger shaft? There are two little tabs that are bent down into the vacant area that appear to maybe be designed to retain some sort of packing or filtering material...

Thanks for any help,

Paul

For #2, here's a pic from Alan71 showing nothing in the end of the solenoid

Thanks for that Mooser, but maybe Alan71 had it wrong. Who certified him as a definative corvette expert?

Ha! Just kidding! We all know he is an EXPERT expert. That photo showed just what I need to see.

Sure do miss Alan71 and Dub on these forums!

The CEC solenoid I have for my 71 does have a foam piece around the plunger.

It would be better to have no foam rather than deteriorated foam that might hinder the operation. The foam was to keep grease, etc. from gunking up the shaft and hindering the operation.
I'd probably replace it with some scrap foam I have laying around being careful not to retard the operation of the plunger.

Well there you go, maybe not visible on the image I posted or it was one of the 3 things that Alan said the car was missing

OK that sure clears things up in the other direction. I appreciate all your help. I'll have a try at tracking down that air filter but if I can't find one, I'll come up with some sort of replacement!

...and I still miss Alan and Dub!

I was wondering about both of them. I guess they are no longer with us?

I've heard they are both OK, just haven't been posting - hopefully only taking a break, not a permanent hiatis...
