79 Rear spring keeps separating. Third time this has occurred. I put it back together and it eventually happens again. I know it as soon as it happens...
I can feel it when taking a corner. Other than I should simply purchase a new one any thoughts as to why this keeps happening?
If your new Diff cover is a 2 1/2" and your spring is 2 1/4" you will need spacer plates to prevent the spring from splaying. Several companies sell them here is Paragons item # 13023K
There seems to be some debate as to the pair of original Band Clamps if they were for shipping only, or left in place to prevent your issue.
Mine are still in place, one at each end, half way across.
That band clamp is handy for placing a 2 X 4 next to with floor jack when swapping-out the spring bolts.

The half shaft u-joint on the right inside has too much space on it.
i would retorque these bolts..i assume with car on ground? Dont overtorque..
i tried to compare with mine i dont see a clamp or resemblance of one...assume yours is original..maybe a few spacers fell out?
Don't know if a 79 is the same, but my 78 has a plate either side of the spring. If the plates were missing it would allow the spring to move much more easily.
Plate not on mine but your point brought me to this....op....the bolts if tight should not allow movement...ISThatBolt bent????
if tight..it must be to allow the spring to move..?
Aren't the two front bolts shorter than the two rear bolts? Putting them in the wrong location and tightening them will damage the diff case and it will leak.
Your springs appear to be the ones that came on the car. There are thin rubber sections that go between each leaf. I had the service shop remove my spring and take it to a shop that rebuilds springs. The upturn on the ends indicate yours are oem. If you decide to purchase new ones, I think you could sell yours as the replacement springs look different, and some folks want the oem springs.
