I'm trying to fire up my ZZ4 for the first time this afternoon, and it will only pop and backfire through the carburetor. I think I might have the plug wires in the wrong order, since I can't believe the timing would be that far out directly from the factory.
Currently I have my distributor wired so that the wires are as follows.
The Number 1 wire is in the socket right even with the front edge of the vacuum advance canister.
Then moving clockwise around the distributor 8, 4, 3, 6, 5, 7, 2 is this correct or am I all messed up?
Re: HEI distributor plug wire order? (patsnitrovette)
Thanks, Pat I just needed to verify that I had not lost my mind and terminal dyslexia hadn't scrambled my vision. I guess I'll go back down to the garage and verify everything again and try and fire it up!
Re: HEI distributor plug wire order? (Smokehouse69)
patsnitrovette is right. Take off your distributor cap and bump the engine until the #1 piston is at top dead center( on its compression stroke).Wherever the rotor is pointing this is where the #1 wire will go. (It is a good idea to mark the base of the distributor so when ever you have to replace the cap and rotor you will know when the #1 piston is at top dead center). Replace distributor cap. Once you route the #1 wire then route the wiresin the remaining of the firing order (8436752) in a counterclockwise direction. Keeping in mind that the drivers side bank has odd numbers and the passenger side has even numbers.

a small note. the firing order is stamped on the intake maknifold of my 79 L82. Dont know if this is the case for your motor. You might give a quick peak around.
