Default Brake Curiosity

If rebuilding calipers, can you leave the springs out of the pistons?
Will the pressure when applying the brakes force the pads against the rotor as normal? Don't the springs just keep the pistons in contact with rotors? Or, are they necessary to prevent leak issues?

The springs keep the pistons lightly against the rotors to keep them 'square' in their respective bores, operating smoothly (without cocking), and ready to immediately apply stopping force to the rotors. Can you leave them out? It's your car...do what you want.

The pistons will back away from the rotor causing a spongy pedal, they are required.
