Default Won't start!!

1. After sitting, hot, for about an hour, the engine will initially start, run for about 4-5 seconds and then die (like it flooded). To restart, I have to press the accelerator to the floor, hold it and turn the key until it fires up (the same way you would on a flooded engine)

2. After the engine dies, it will NOT restart…just a single click at the starter. I “jumped” the starter (screw drive across the the 2 posts on the starter), the engine fired up and ran. PLUS, after getting home, it started 4-5 consecutive times.

3. But…the symptoms reoccur just like before after sitting hot.

5. It’s a BRAND new PowerMaster XS starter from Summit Racing.

6. Did notice that I’m getting 12-13 volts on one side and only 6 volts on the other post…..what could be causing that?

Does sound weird with the 12V versus 6V.

Is it possible the starter is getting too hot, close to a header? Could try a starter blanket to insulate it from heat.

The hard start issue sounds very similar to vapor lock. I had to put a wood spacer under my carb and wrap the fuel lines in front of and on top of the engine with heat shield to solve mine.

Sounds like at least two problems. The not starting sounds like a fuel delivery problem. I doubt its flooding. Not impossible, but more likely starving for fuel. Common for these cars to heat soak after being turned off and boiling off the fuel. If it starts with prolonged cranking, you might be looking at a weak fuel pump. How long have you owned the car? Is this a new develpment?

As for the starter not turning when hot, that can also be a heat problem. What, though, do you mean by "6 volts on the other post"? What other post?

I have had both of those problems. The heat soak/fuel starvation problem was solved with a high rise intake manifold/heat deflector plate/insulator gasket/taller hood, and the starter problem was solved with a high torque gear reduction starter. If you already have a suitable starter, you may have an issue with bad cables or a bad connection.

Is that MSD dist a "Street Fire" HEI ?

Under Car: unbolt the NEG batt cable from frame & inspect closely for corrosion then clean both frame & terminal then firmly reattach w/ dielectric grease
detach & clean both battery terminals & posts.
