As many on here already know, I've had my 77 for a long time now. One thing I've always wondered about is exactly what is inside my trans. 4 speed manual.
Photo of the right side of the trans. Pretty clear on the date code. Car was built 1st of Dec.1976. No reason for me to believe it's not original.
Photo of left side, these numbers were upside down, I flipped the photo. Hard to make out but there is a 1 on the end, as in 901.
does any of this mean anything? Are there numbers somewhere else I don't know about?
Of course I had it out about a year ago putting in a new clutch, never thought to look it over at the time.
It's about the only part on the car that hasn't been repaired or rebuilt. Still works great. Would just be interested in knowing what is in it.
You're posting casting dates rather than assembly codes. Look for the assembly stamp along with a VIN derivative that maches your vehicle serial numbers (last five digits).
Here's what you need...NCRS 75-77 TIMJG revision is under process and these are the current pages. Maybe you'll find something and can add to it.
Thanks Hunt4, I looked at those pages. Yes it gives me an idea where to look for more numbers. Not certain how easy they'll be to see with trans installed. Next time I'm under there I'll have another look.
also I see why they may wish to revise these pages. Shows date codes with a letter, while on my car date is clearly all numbers.
I've long known it's a Super T10, more interested in which one.
Look here to see if the vin matches your vin. The lower characters indicate the build date. In this case WD2182 (Warner, April, 21st, 1978, 2nd shift). The top set of characters should be a partial vin. More BW info: http://pontiacpower.org/BW.htm
First, I know this tread is about 77 4 speed numbers:
I would like to add that along with the VIN number stamped on the case there (should) also be a set of characters (Letters & Numbers) stamped into the fluid pan of the automatic transmission.
This set of characters was used to document the transmission number by a technician at the dealer when filling out the New Vehicle Inspection Procedure check list.
The only way to know this is by having the procedure document.

Yes the main case and the side cover numbers verify it's a Super T10 for your year car. The close ratio ST10's where well made and used as a replacement for the M22 behind the BB 454's. My reference book says a close ratio ST10 will have the letters HW stenciled on the main case below the sidecover. A HS would indicate a wide ratio ST10. But I think that conflicts with what that NCRS document that calls out a "Broadcast Number" and it would be a ZW for close ratio and ZU for the narrow ratio trans and the Pontiac Power chart calling out ZT.
I think you need to carefully remove the grease on the main case to look for stenciled letters if you don't want to remove the sidecover and count teeth.
I'm kinda interested here as I bought a '77 trans for a spare for my '74 and have since read the close ratio BW ST10 is a very good 4 speed - and it bolts right into my car w/o changes. I only paid $300 for it and thought it a bargain even if it needs rebuild. I had a Muncie M20 I was planning to upgrade for my car thinking it was stronger until I found this ST10. So I've talked to trans shops that say the ST10 can be upgraded with strong Italian made gears and steel mid-plates to near the M22 strength. So now I have to dig in the garage to take another look for 2 rings on the input shaft.
Matching numbers is always nice so keep it and don't let it go. VIN should be stamped into the trans near the date code. Please let us know what you find.
