OK, so I've been under my car a fair bit lately. And mind you, I've owned this car for over 30 years now. Fairly early on I found the diff cover had been changed out to a heavy duty unit. Never gave that much thought. And a number of years ago, long before I was even a member of this forum, I put in hardened yokes. But today, I noticed these numbers stamped into the bottom of my diff that I never really paid any attention to before.

Now I'm wondering if the 71 on the end might mean this diff is out of a 71?? Anything here tell anyone anything? Ratio? Am I just looking once again at useless numbers? Thanks much for any insight.

Looks like OD 218 W 71

If correct,

OD: 3.36 posi, 1977
213: Julian, Aug 6, (1977, not a leap year)
W: Warren plant

71: Don't know, 7 could reference the year year, since it decodes to a 1977. 1, Warren shift 1?

Best guess

The OD code was used only in 1976 and 1977 so at least the case dates to 1977. Concur the “1” indicates assembly on first shift.
