Default Engine bay paint

Hi Corvette lovers,

I'm almost done with my frame off.

Putting the left side Chanel Insert, as well as #4 insert. It is weird because the hole in the Chanel and the hole in #4 doesn't perfectly match as you will see however, the hole on # 2 does.

Everything has been cleaned. From the front to the back, all birdcage undercarriage was cleaned and painted with POR15 gloss black. Looks very good. Thinking of putting a coat of clear paint on the rear section to make it easier to clean in the future. Not sure if it will stick to fiberglass.

My question is regarding the engine bay. I would like to paint it with POR 15 gloss black as well. Just not sure if it will stick to fiberglass. I have read in previous threads that it should be in flat black paint. In any case, I want to make sure that I can keep it clean without removing the paint every time I'm put a cloth on it.

Feedback /suggestion?

Denis

Looks like some good work that you've done on the underbody and rocker channels. The POR 15 will stick to the fiberglass but you don't really need to use it unless you have extra to get rid of as it is not a cheap coating. I've used Krylon Industrial semi gloss black on most fiberglass parts with pretty good results..

Thanks, a small question about this product, if you need to clean oil or grease on it, does the paint stay on the fiberglass when you remove the stain with a cloth, or as a bit of paint is also removed?

You know what works really well in that environment with uneven surfaces and the elements is truck bed coating. I have used it successfully on undercarriage areas as well as engine compartments. It is durable, slight pebble finish and the right level of gloss. Easy to clean, too.

did you brace the cage at a higher point before you cut the rocker channel out ? I remember DUB saying some cages have a built in force that's released when you cut a section out .

I replaced both channels on mine , with parts from a 74 wreck and all holes lined up perfect .

Have you measured to see if there's any difference in the door gap area ?

Thanks gents,

Yes, the cage was attached at a higher point however I did not cut the Chanel as I also had to replace #1. The insert to replace #1, comes with #2 with it (it's all in one piece). So I put in the (#1, #2) insert first. Welded-in place and then put the (#2, #3) Insert and welded this one as well. I knew that it would not perfectly match in lenght. Seems like the (#2, #3) insert is 3/4 of an inch short. But it was either that or I had to cut a piece of the (#2, #3) insert, which I did not want to have more strength.

Not sure why you want to put 'gloss' paint in the engine bay. Gloss paint will make every surface defect much more noticeable. Unless your are 'fine-finishing' the surfaces of the engine compartment, it would be best to use 'satin' black paint as was used at the factory. I have seen some engine bays done in semi-gloss. While that doesn't make the surface flaws stand out as much as does gloss paint, it does look a bit odd when compared to other 'stock' looking C3's.

The choice is yours, of course...but that's my take on your question.

Hi Gents,

I followed your advice and painted with a brush and POR15 Flat Black. You're right, it does hide some defect. Looks good to me, almost dried.

Now once it is completely dry, the next step will be to put hte body on the frame.

Thanks for your advise,

Denis

Nice!! I love the POR (if you follow directions)... NIce knowing it will never rust
IMo if you ever went to sell it the POR should be a plus as done right that stuff wont ever come off or get rust underneath. Mines almost 20 yrs old still looks fresh (por)
