Default Dome lights

Trying to figure out how to make my dome lights come on in my 80 model. Will come on with the light switch but not when I open the door. Can anyone lead me in the direction of fixing this. Guessing the door switch is a ground.

Yes pretty much all the switches are grounds for these (and of course the ground needs to be run as a separate wire due to that whole fiberglass body thing...)
Sounds like the circuit works so I'd take a first look at the door switch. could be anything as simple as dirty contacts. I believe the 80 still has the courtesy switches at the front of the door jamb
First, try rotating the plunger back and forth a little ways while lightly pulling out on it, that might be enough to clean off the contact area. There are a few different styles of switches so don't spin it around in case it's one with the wires attached
Second, carefully pull the switch without rotating again and see if a wire isn't loose/off. Try grounding the contact with a jumper wire, that will hopefully tell you is the problem is at the switch or somewhere else

If you don't have a wiring diagram, check here to get one

You need the schematic because the door switches work together with a timer , the timer will leave the lights on for about 60 seconds after you shut the door
