Thanks for that M. When I took apart my center console the radio disconnected this wire so it must be close to the center console but there's no other wire in sight. I'll give yours a try! Thanks again.
Worst of it looks like it pulled the connector off (the pink part) whatever wire it was on, than might mean there's a loose wire laying somewhere that's powered with the ignition.... that has a bare end?
Or is that a different end there?
M
Turns out that’s a different end there with the grey wire. I’m not sure what that is. I tried putting them together to see if that gave me power for the radio and it did nothing. Still a mystery.
Interesting because my center gauge lights aren’t working either.
Not sure how your harness is put together but that would tell me a couple of things. As a previous poster said gray is typically dash lights. I would check your dash light fuse and make sure it isn’t popped. If it is then you probably know why and terminate that wire. If it isn’t then a splice or something else is jacked up.
Where can I connect the power line from the retro mod radio in my 79 to? This is the "ignition" wire coming from my radio for power.
Not sure how your 79 is wired but I know on a 68 harness the radio only receives a switched hot. I’m going through the dash now cleaning up wiring and adding speaker wires etc so this is pretty fresh in my head as far as a 68 goes. With that said it is an 11 year newer car so it might have a “memory”, but that doesn’t make sense TBH that a constant hot would be there but not a switched hot. I would verify what hots you already have on your OE connector via a test light or a multimeter. You actually might need a constant+ vs a switched hot like I do in the case of the 68.
Thanks. I’ll check that out. This is all so frustrating because all I wanted to do was update my circuit boards and change the light bulbs. And now, I can’t get anything to work, my speedometer needle broke off, vacuum hoses have broken and on and on. I should have just left well enough alone. But I’m thankful for everyone’s help, that’s for sure. It’s a great car. It just needed me to leave it alone.
enjoy... i suck at reading these.. but helpful.. get a laminated one.. unless someone butchered it maybe look at crutchfield for a connector that goes to OEM.. then theres the what did you have 8 track cb, power antenna or not etc..

Look around the back of the radio for a Yellow wire.
The original 3 wire radio power plug (most likely long gone) in your 79 had a Yellow wire (switched power circuit 43) a Black wire (chassis ground circuit 150) and a Grey wire (instrument lamps circuit 8).
The Yellow radio wire is fuse protected marked K in the diagram above.
The Grey Instrument lamp wire is fuse protected marked A in the diagram above.
Just to throw in a extra step, MAKE SURE that the single Grey wire shown in your photo has continuity to one side of the Instrument lamp fuse A.
Why? because one wire to the original Left side front speaker was also Grey.....Could it be that speaker wire???
